Announcement 2 – My Prototyping Book
I’ve been sitting on this for a couple of weeks and am so excited that I can finally speak about it publically. I recently signed a deal with Rosenfeld Media to write a book on prototyping. I can’t tell you how excited I am about this.
This has been a long-time goal – writing a book is something that’s been a goal of mine since I was in university. I’ve been published a few times in the past, both in print and on-line, but to write my own book has been a long-time goal. Actually, my goal is three books before I retire. So, this will be my first.
Rosenfeld Media rocks – I really can’t think of anyone, or any company I’d rather write my first book for than Rosenfeld media. Lou is not only a personal friend, but someone I have tremendous respect for. Most importantly, I think he’s got a great approach with RM. The RM books are going to be short and highly-focused – cut the fluff and get me what I need to just do it. One of the smartest things they’re doing, IMHO, is field testing the books. So, my prototyping book will be prototyped, tested, and go through a number of iterative cycles prior to publishing. In fact, you can keep track of the book’s progress on my blog, as well as the book’s site over at RM.
I’d love to hear from you on what you’d like to see in a practioners’ guide to prototyping. And yes, I am soliciting for case studies. So, if you have something you’d like to contribute, a valuable example on how prototyping helped, send it to me.
Prototyping is something I’m passionate about – It’s one subject, among many, that I’m truly passionate about. I’ve seen first hand the value of prototyping – how it’s shaped products we’ve worked on and communicated concepts in a much clearer fashion than a simple sketch could have.
Here’s the formal announcement:
Rosenfeld Media is proud to announce that Todd Zaki Warfel has begun work on a book on developing prototypes. "A Practitioner’s Guide to Prototyping"
will help you quickly flesh out your design ideas, test your assumptions, and gather real-time feedback from users. The book will discuss how prototypes are more than just a design tool, demonstrating how they can help you market a product, gain internal buy-in, and test feasibility with your development team.
Todd is a founding partner at Messagefirst, where he focuses on design-research for consumer and b2b products. With over 16 years of industry experience, degrees in English, Creative Writing, and Cognitive Psychology, and a background in Product Design, Todd has been fortunate enough to create over 15 industry first products.
Because we envision our books as dialogues, all Rosenfeld Media books are developed with extensive reader input. Each of our books has a dedicated site where you and the author can share information on (and questions about) the topic. Please visit the site for Todd’s book and subscribe to its RSS
feed:

The book’s table of contents and an initial content sample are already available, and we’ll be sharing additional free content there as the book’s development progresses.
[...] There is a new book on the horizon about prototyping from Todd Warfel. I’m not familiar with him or his work but I am interested in different points of view on this aspect of design, particularly as it relates to interactive, because it is one of those areas in the process where things can be wildly different for each designer.
